How to read more books without making it a chore

Reading more is rarely about willpower. It is about removing friction and lowering the bar until starting is easy. Here are the habits that actually move the number, none of which involve speed-reading or guilt.

Shrink the goal until it is almost too small

“Read for an hour” is a goal you will skip on a tired night. “Read one page” is one you will keep, and once the book is open you usually read more. Make the daily commitment so small it feels silly to refuse. The streak you want is showing up, not hitting a word count.

Stack reading onto something you already do

Habits stick when they attach to an existing routine. Pick a stable cue: after you make coffee, on the commute, the moment you get into bed. A consistent time and place does more for a reading habit than motivation ever will. Decide the when and where once, and you stop having to decide every day.

Always have a book within reach

The reader who finishes more books is usually just the one whose book is always to hand: on the nightstand, in a bag, or as an audiobook in your pocket. Audiobooks count. So do ebooks in a waiting room. The format that gets read is the best format.

Give yourself permission to DNF

Nothing kills a reading habit like being stuck in a book you are not enjoying. Finishing every book is a school rule, not a reading rule. Mark it “did not finish,” put it down without ceremony, and start something you actually want to read. A DNF is a decision, not a failure.

Set a goal you cannot really lose

A reading goal should pull you forward, not hang over you. Aim for “reading days a week” rather than an unbroken daily streak, so a missed evening does not undo the month. The point is rhythm, not a perfect record. If a week gets away from you, the next one is open.

Track it gently, for you

Seeing your reading add up is quietly motivating, as long as it never becomes homework. A light log of what you finished, how it felt, and roughly when is enough to keep momentum.
